Orthodontist vs. dentist

An orthodontist is a dentist, but a dentist is not an orthodontist. All orthodontists are dentists first, but not every dentist has the qualifications to be an orthodontist.

While earning his DDS degree, Dr. McGrory earned multiple scholastic awards, including induction into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honors society, an honor limited to the top 10% in any graduating dental class, and the prestigious Kramer Award. Dr. McGrory continued his formal education for 2 or 3 additional years before receiving the necessary license and certification. Dr. McGrory went on to complete his orthodontic residency at the UT Health Science Center in Houston In 2009, he gained his board certification from the American Board of Orthodontics before going on to serve as a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.

As an orthodontist, Dr. McGrory has spent years studying nothing but how and why to move teeth. This includes what to do, how to plan, and how to execute the appropriate treatment plan. Dr. McGrory exceeds the standards of orthodontics while still being a dedicated life-long learner.

Why does it matter if you see your Lake Jackson orthodontist?

Specialists receive additional training to give them the skills needed to deal with more complex orthodontic problems. Dentists receive basic orthodontic training which allows them to perform root canals, extract wisdom teeth, and treat young children who do not need to see an orthodontist yet. Seeing a specialist like your Lake Jackson orthodontist may change your experience in braces by:

  • Providing additional treatment options.
  • Giving you more efficient treatment and visits, because it is the office’s primary area of care.
  • Knowing that you’ll receive the best possible outcome on your treatment plan, especially if you have severe bite problems that need to be addressed.
  • Personal experience treating multiple cases that share your unique concerns
  • Being seen more quickly, as a family dentist will be focused on longer patient cases or emergencies throughout the day.
  • You may think it’s easier to have your orthodontic work completed by your dentist. Convenience shouldn’t be a concern because you will only be stopping by our office every six to eight weeks.

And don’t let price be a problem either! Lake Jackson Orthodontics is proud to provide affordable orthodontic treatment in the Lake Jackson area.

Lake Jackson braces

Braces in Lake Jackson are an excellent choice for correcting complex tooth issues. Since they can sometimes work faster at aligning teeth and closing gaps than other treatments might, overall treatment time may be slightly reduced.

Braces don’t require some of the more complex technology or expensive equipment that newer treatments can, meaning Lake Jackson braces are a cost-effective orthodontic option.

Traditional metal braces are one of the most efficient orthodontic tools we have. They’re made out of metal or ceramic brackets that are affixed to the teeth, then connected by wires and tiny rubber bands or elastics.

These brackets, wires, and bands work together to apply the gentle pressure that will gradually move the teeth into the positions we want them to be in as long as you have regular adjustments with our doctors.

Lake Jackson Invisalign

Invisalign is incredibly popular with both patients and orthodontists in Lake Jackson and is the top alternative to traditional braces. Instead of brackets and bands, the Invisalign system uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten your teeth.

Invisalign aligners are made of comfortable plastic material and are customized to fit snugly over your teeth. To keep your teeth moving in the direction you want them to, you’ll need to switch your invisible trays out for the next one in the series every 1-2 weeks as directed by Dr. McGrory.

The Invisalign system can only work if the recommended guidelines are followed exactly! Aligners should be worn 20-22 hours per day throughout treatment. If patients neglect to wear the aligners as directed, it can impede the results and also add time to the orthodontic process.

Invisalign is at its most efficient when correcting many of the most common orthodontic issues. For some complex cases, Invisalign may not be a good option. A free consultation with Dr. McGrory at Lake Jackson Orthodontics will allow us to determine your eligibility for Invisalign.
